If I had to guess, I would lean towards either the length being beyond 30 seconds or possibly file size of the ringtone. It also seems like there has been a little variance with each iOS version that has come out. I've had ringtones stop working when I've upgraded. Usually because of the time length. For example, I had a ringtone that was 40 seconds work like a champ to sync over. After I upgraded to iOS4, it wouldn't sync anymore. I trimmed it to 30 seconds, synced no prob. Try making the ringtone a bit under 30 secs ... say 28 secs and see if it will sync.

If I had to guess, I would say due to file size. I've had this happen once and it was with a song with a high sample rate. I think there is some magic number on the file size ... I don't know what it is off the top of my head. What I did to correct the issue was I dropped the time from 30 secs to 27 secs. After that, it worked like a charm. No strict reason I picked 27 secs ... I was just trying to reduce the file size slightly. I figured a trim of 3 seconds would do the trick. Give it a try and see if it helps.

OK i just done everything u said. It works great to some extent. It adds some of the ringtones on my phone but not all of the ones I added. Should I go back and erase the ringtones i've already used so when I sync it will add the ones that are new. I know when it adds it ti ur phone it goes under custom ringtone. It sure does. Just select Convert to ACC from the "Advanced" menu ... or just right click the song and select Convert to ACC.

Does anyone know if this still works with iTunes 9 (0.3) and firmware 3.1.x.
I don't have the AAC converter and I don't have the right click "convert to AAC" option.

Thanks goodness Apple removed DRM protection from iTunes, that removes a step from the process. I’d like to add that many people don’t have a bluetooth to transfer their ringtones to their phone so they’ll to use an app like Data pilot to copy any music files from your hard drive (usually in “My Documents/My Music” on Windows) to your phone.

Well ... your first problem is that you are trying to use an unsupported file type on the Dare. The m4r format is an apple format. The Dare uses midi or mp3. Try using an mp3 file instead. You can convert the m4r to mp3 using itunes I believe ... but if you already have the mp3, don't bother with the conversion.

Thanks for the tip it worked perfectly. I'm using iTunes 8.02 and it STILL worked. I had to delete the file from iTunes and then double click it for iTunes to import into the library and it showed up as a ringtone.

I don't know if anyone else has posted this method, but this is what I got to work for me. Follow the steps up to and including changing the name to myringtone .m4r. I had to put the space in before the file extension and no spaces within in any other part of the name. Then I dragged it in my iTunes library ringtones folder. After it was in the folder, I double clicked it and when it played it showed up in my ringtones in the iTunes application. After that I was able to sync normally and it all worked.
